GJIROKASTRA, July 21 – Summer heat has brought the first cases of fires around the country.
In Vrioni in southern Gjirokastra firefighters fought hard to keep flames under control and not let it engulf a fuel station nearby.
Emergency officials say that the country has not enough equipment to take care of itself. They have started a project to buy four firefighting trucks and other equipment only for the immediate needs.
The country usually asks neighboring countries to assist in fire cases.
Hundreds of thousands of hectares of forests were burnt last year, many due to the lack of fighting equipment and often set on fire on purpose from people trying to turn them into areas where they can build or use for other purposes.
