TIRANA, July 17 – PAMECA, the international assistance mission for the Albanian police, expressed concern Tuesday about the move to eliminate over 800 policemen as part of the recent reform steps undertaken by Interior Minister Bujar Nishani.
PAMECA is the main international mission assisting in the modernization of police forces in Albania.
“PAMECA mission expressed its deep concern on the way the recent move in the state police was handled,” said a statement. “The way the cuts were made should be transparent and in accordance with the law.”
Some 850 police officers were cut recently in a move undertaken by the minister.
“Such cuts made possible the economic profits expected as a result of the high-cost of training of individuals in specific spheres,” it said.
The statement added that such a move has brought about the weakening of some departments and sectors which were considered vital for the continuity of the projects, and at the same time in complying with the acceptance requirements of the European Union and NATO.
