TIRANA, June 20 – The opposition is continuously saying that the municipal elections in the capital Tirana were manipulated by the governing Democratic Party and the Central Election Commission.
Consequently, some members of the Socialist Party have stated that their party does not exclude the possibility of repeating elections in Tirana.
One of its lawmakers Damian Gjiknuri has said that the repetition of elections is not an issue that may be determined by the SP but must be addressed by the Electoral Code.
“This is an option that we do not arrange, just the Electoral Code does. After the CEC finishes the whole process we will judge if this process is legal or not. Illegal means a process, such risks being considered by any judicial instance based on the Electoral Code, but I cannot prejudge,” noted Gjiknuri.
Socialist leader Edi Rama had been considered the preliminary victor with 10 votes more than Democratic candidate Lulzim Basha.
However, when the election authorities decided to include miscast ballots in the final tally, Basha came out with an 81 vote lead.
Consequently, the opposition Socialists appealed the verdict to the Electoral College which decided to recheck of all ballot boxes and include all miscast or contested ballots in the final tally.
During this process, which started last Saturday, the opposition has made many complaints of the possibility of manipulation of the boxes (adding ballots for Basha) and have hinted that they will not recognize the new result.
