Italy’s Serenissima won the race for this highway by bidding Euro 39.87 million, from a price tag of Euro 60 million, saving 20 million euros or more than 33 percent of the fund, says the Public Works Ministry
TIRANA, March 19 – Italy’s Serenissima, which last year submitted the lowest bid to build the Fier by-pass, a 22 km-highway linking the southwestern city of Fier to Levan town, has signed a deal with the Albanian government to start works.
“Works for the construction of this motorway will be carried out by Italy’s Serenissima, an experienced company in construction and highway management. Serenissima won the race for this highway by bidding Euro 39.87 million, from a price tag of Euro 60 million, saving 20 million euros or more than 33 percent of the fund,” says the Public Works Ministry in a statement.
Last September, Italy’s Serenisima submitted the lowest bid for the construction of the Fier by-pass. Eleven companies submitted bids varying from Serenisima’s Euro 39.7 million to 118 million euros by Turkey’s Onur. Greece’s Actor already engaged with the Tirana-Elbasan highway bid 70 million euro for the by-pass construction.
The project concerns the construction of 22 kilometers of a dual two-lane motorway on a new alignment around the town of Fier, situated near the coast in central Albania. This is the last remaining section to be improved on the main north-south axis between the capital Tirana, Durr쳠(the second largest city) and Greece. The project is co-funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.
The Fier Bypass project consists of a new dual carriageway road bypass between the city of Fier and the town of Levan for a total length of approximately 22km. It is intended that the project will be partly financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) in the amount of EUR 30 million. This corridor is one of the Albanian government’s priority objectives in the Transport Sector as stated in the Albanian National Transport Plan (ANTP).
The section North of Fier (Lushnje – Fier) is already constructed. This link will connect the city of Fier to the other cities of Albania. The link is very important for the development of southern Albania for both industrial and tourism development in the area. The proposed new Bypass of Fier and Levan starts North of the village of Mbrostar and ends South-West of Levan.
