TIRANA, May 31 – The Kosovo Parliament approved a resolution to remove border checks and roaming fees with Albania on Wednesday.
The resolution was proposed by the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) and was approved through a parliamentary majority.
The law to remove roaming charges between the neighboring countries was approved with 69 votes in favor and one abstention, while the law to remove border checks passed received 73 votes in favor and none against or abstaining, according to Kosovo media.
Dardan Molliqaj, a PSD lawmaker and spokesperson, told media that relations with Albania should be based on mutual respect and commitment.
“Albania is ranked Kosovo’s best friend for years. 31 percent of tourists from last year were from Kosovo, who were the first foreign tourists ever in Albania,” Molliqaj said.
In a social media post, Molliqaj congratulated the effort and thanked everyone who became a part of it, as the approval of these resolutions come after many discussions between the two countries’ leaders.
Albania and Kosovo have held several joint government meetings over the past few years, for which a number of analysts have constantly said they produced more media show than substance.
These resolution approvals can help bridge the gaps in trade and network development that have been created ever since Kosovo declared its independence in 2008.
