TIRANA, July 6 – Hasan Tahsin, an Albanian-Ottoman astronomer, mathematician and philosopher, was commemorated this week in a scientific symposium on his 130th death anniversary.
Hasan Tahsini (1811-1881)– also known as Hoxha Tahsin– was the first rector of Istanbul University and one of the founders of the Central Committee for Defending Albanian Rights. He is regarded as one of the greatest scholars of the Ottoman Empire of the 19th century.
Addressing the symposium, Ramiz Zekaj, the director of the Albanian Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (AIITC) said Tahsin was an activist in promoting a common Albanian alphabet saying that Albanians have their own language, history and culture and therefore deserve their own alphabet.
The conference was organized by the “Albanian-Turkish Hasan Tahsini” cultural association, in cooperation with the AIITC and the “Yunus Emre” Turkish cultural centre.
