TIRANA, May 13 – Prosecutor General Ina Rama sent to all lawmakers hundreds of pages to support her request to lift Fatmir Mediu’s immunity charged of abuse of post in connection to the march 15 blast that killed 26 and injured 302 persons near capital Tirana.
It was not clear the exact figure of the pages of the documents, ranging from 700 to 1,000 in the local media, but those proved to the lawmakers why Mediu should have no immunity ad be prosecuted.
Rama also warned lawmakers they would be penalized if they made the document public as it was still in the investigative stage.
It is not clear whether the governing Democratic Party lawmakers will vote to lift Mediu’s immunity as their leader Sali Berisha, also premier, said last week they would agree to any such a request unless it was a political one. Did he consider that a political one? None can say at the moment.
But the other move on lifting lawmakers’ immunity for whatever case means that Mediu will likely be lifted the immunity.
That process will be clearer this month when the parliament starts the debate on the case.
The opposition has asked an urgent session also accusing Berisha and his government of favoring and being to blame for the explosion.
