TIRANA, April 13 – Apparently, Albania’s healthcare system has a bright spot, low childbirth-related deaths, The British newspaper the Guardian reported this week.
The number of women who die during pregnancy is low, at 8.2 for every 100,000 live births, but ranks only 23rd in a world league topped by Italy, whose rate is 3.9.
Just as many women are dying in pregnancy and childbirth in the UK as they were 20 years ago, leaving Britain trailing behind countries like Albania, Poland and Slovakia as well as the wealthier nations of Europe.
The safest country in the world in which to give birth appears to be Italy, with a death rate of 3.9 women for every 100,000 births – down from 7.4 in 1990. Next come Sweden, Luxembourg and Australia. All have brought their death rates down by more than 1 percent over the same period. Israel, in 8th place and Malta, in 9th, have brought their death rates down by 3.2 percent and 4.7 percent respectively. But the UK had 8.4 deaths per 100,000 births in 1990 and 8.2 deaths in 2008, a drop of just 0.1 percent.
That is a very interesting an encouraging data found in the British media.
At least Albania is good in that particular sector of healthcare, and should be encouraging for the other health departments.
