TIRANA, March 12 – Marat/Sade, the best work by German writer Peter Weiss will make its premiere as a play at the National Theatre in Tirana directed by renowned Arben Kumbaro and starring a cast of veteran actors.
Director Kumbaro describes the controversial play, also known as The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat, “theatre within theatre, revolution within revolution, craziness within craziness.”
“There is not one simple story but many such where the end is the beginning and the beginning is the end. This is a work of art and not a political pamphlet although it guillotines extremist politics to resurrect and make it a necessary means for progress,” says Kumbaro.
The play which was translated by late publicist Ardian Klosi stars among others even National Theatre director Hervin Çuli.
A 1963 play by Peter Weiss, Marat/Sade is described as “incorporating dramatic elements characteristic of both Artaud and Brecht, it is a bloody and unrelenting depiction of class struggle and human suffering which asks whether true revolution comes from changing society or changing oneself.”
The drama which will come in the form of a musical as almost half an-hour of the play is dedicated to musical and singing performance is expected to make its premiere on March 14 and 15 at 19.00.
