TIRANA, Nov. 24 – “Marta” a new Albanian drama written and directed by Erand Sojli made its premiere this week at the National Theatre, where imprisoned women had also been invited to enjoy the piece focusing on the sacrifices, efforts and relationship Albanian women have established with their own, the society and love.

“The society should protect women because they are a nation’s pillar. If we mistreat their youth, then we will no longer have healthy mothers raising healthy kids” said director Erand Sojli.

“We are not born women: we become such. No biological, psychic and economic fate determines the shape a humane women takes in the society; she is the entirety of civilization she processes in this interim product between the men and the emasculation we call woman,” he adds about the drama starring veteran actress Yllka Mujo.

Women are today seeking to participate in a movement through which civilization is continuously attempting to legitimize and go beyond their own limits. they cannot accept to give their own lives unless life has a meaning; women can’t be mothers without assuming a role in the economic, political and social life, producers say about “Marta,” a drama dedicated to Albanian women.

Women in Albania continue facing discrimination and are often victims of domestic violence.

The drama, one of the few Albanian pieces staged at the National Theatre, made its premiere this week with two performances on Nov. 22 and 23.
