TIRANA, July 4 – The leader of the small leftist government coalition partner Socialist Movement for Integration, Ilir Meta, made public a letter asking the Supreme Court not to suspend his case on alleged corruption for violation of procedures.
Meta is accused of corruption during the time he served as deputy prime minister and foreign minister. His former partner, ex-economy minister Dritan Prifti accused him of trying to influence him on favoring a company in a public tender and also of nominating persons to public jobs based on party affiliation lists.
Meta has denied both charges.
The Supreme Court is to decide next week whether they are eligible to judge Meta.
Meta’s lawyers asked the court last month to recognize that the prosecutors had violated procedures when starting the probe as Meta was still under a parliamentary immunity.
