TIRANA, April 5 – President Alfred Moisiu sent a letter to the parliament Thursday appealing to both political groupings to establish a constructive cooperation in the reforms of the judiciary in the country. “One of the main priorities remains the continuation of the joint reforms to improve the activity of the judiciary, to make it more capable and efficient for a normal function of the rule of law,” the letter said. The president said that the judiciary had noted a series of improvement and had already created a good basis for a solid future. One of the achievements was the creation of the Court of Grave Crimes that has produced very good results in fighting crime.
The achieved results give the hope that the continuation of the reforms will further increase the judiciary’s impartiality, integrity and trust in the public, he said. Moisiu urged for deep and consensual reforms like creating a long-term strategy for the judiciary. For that he suggested the creation of a parliamentary ad hoc commission with representatives from the judiciary, legal experts and experts delegated from the parliamentary groupings. Judiciary has been Albania’s Achilles’ heel during the post-communist period. Corruption and lack of public trust in it have been continuous obstacles in the country’s efforts of integration into the international institutions.
