TIRANA, June 5 – President Alfred Moisiu met Tuesday with rectors of different Albanian universities who oppose a draft law on university oversight presented by the government.
The law has passed the parliament and now the president is weighing whether to approve the draft. If not approved, it goes back to the parliament for redrafting.
Rectors believe that the new law would infringe on their autonomy and install a government ‘dictate’ over the universities.
They said the draft did not comply with the standards of the national and international norms on higher education.
University professors have asked Moisiu not to approve it, or they say they would take their case to the Constitutional Court as well as the Strasbourg Court.
