TIRANA, Sept. 22 – A record number of 3,800 Albanian and foreign tourists have visited the National Museum of Medieval Art in Korca, southeastern Albania during this year.
The museum’s director, Tatjana Caca says that apart from tourist groups special interest has also been shown by researchers of the Byzantine period to observe icons displayed in this museum, which has a rich collection of 6,500 objects dating from the 5th to 18th century.
Back in 2009, dozens of icons displayed at the Korca Museum of Medieval Art were restored in cooperation with the Greek specialists of the Thessaloniki Byzantine Museum.
The National Museum of Medieval Art in Korca was inaugurated in April 1980. It is one of the most important museum centers in Albania. Its collection includes over 7,000 art and cult items, mainly icons and some stone, wooden, metal and textile works of anonymous and well known artists from different areas of the country.
A collection of best icons and objects created in centuries representing various moments in Albanian iconography development and its main representatives are displayed in the museum’s principal hall. There are works of anonymous artists of the 13-14 th century and other well known ones like Onufri, Onufer Qiprioti, Teacher Kostandini, Jeromak Shpataraku, Selenica, the Zografi Brothers, etc
