TIRANA, Feb. 7 – An exhibition featuring designs of the memorial that will be built in Tirana to commemorate Mother Teresa, the world-famous nun of Albanian origin, has opened at the FAP gallery next to the Academy of Arts. The memorial, which will be built behind the Tirana University’s Rector’s office next to the central boulevard with square named after Mother Teresa and featuring her statue, is an initiative of the Albanian government and the Mother Teresa Cultural Foundation led by the PM’s wife Liri Berisha.
Apart from promoting Mother Teresa’s values and teachings, the memorial will also serve as the house of the values of the Albanian nation. Liri Berisha said the exhibition was another opportunity to discuss the project with professionals before the final version of the memorial is decided.
The exhibition at the FAP gallery will be open until February 15.
Events celebrating Mother Teresa’s 100th birth anniversary in Albania culminated on October 19 when the “Millennium Road of Peace” project was inaugurated at the entry of the of the Artificial Lake of Tirana, where square plaques bearing the signature of many Presidents from around the world will be placed in a symbolic gesture for peace and tolerance in the world.
In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace, and in 1985 she received the Medal of Freedom from the United States. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 19 October 2003, placing her one step from sainthood in the Catholic faith.
