Movies from all the world to compete in TIFF festival

One of this festival’s entries is the premiere of the first Albanian-British coproduction of the essay movie “Here be Dragons” directed by Mark Cousins and produced by Dan Boyd, Genc P쳭eti and Ilir Butka.

TIRANA, Oct. 17 – Hundreds of feature and short film, documentaries and animated movies from all the world have been shortlisted to participate in this year’s edition of the Tirana International Film Festival scheduled to be held from October 23 to 31.
“This eleventh edition of TIFF brings several important changes to its previous years. For the fifth time, TIFF announces a feature film competition along with its prestigious shorts program. TIFF also extends its program to eight days, October 23 to October 31 in order to encompass not only the competing shorts and features but to allow for retrospectives, seminars, classes, press events and special presentations at theatres all over the Albanian capital,” organizers say.
One of this festival’s entries is the premiere of the first Albanian-British coproduction of the essay movie “Here be Dragons” directed by Mark Cousins and produced by Dan Boyd, Genc P쳭eti and Ilir Butka. The movie was featured as a world premiere at Telluride’s Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious festivals, and comes to TIFF as a national premiere.
Nicolas Roegh is the confirmed guest of honor of this festival. He is the author of movies “Performance”, “Walkabout”, “The Man Who Fell to Earth” and more. Roegh is recognized as the author of some of most controversial movies of his time and a rare master of the living, active and true cinematography. For this festival’s audience, he will present “Performance”, a 1970 featuring Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones.
Producer Dan Boyd will present for the public the movie “Aria”, 1987, written and directed by ten most famous directors like Jean Luc Godard, Robert Altmann, Ken Russell, Nikolas Roegh, etc. The segment “One Night at the Opera” directed by Nikolas Roegh, which investigates into King Zog’s assassination attempt in Vienna, 1931 will be screened.
Also for the first time, in collaboration with the Institute for Art and Culture of Taiwan, comes the 1993 movie “The Wedding Banquet” by director Ang Lee, an Oscar winner.
In the context of growing section of Balkan Cinema, Greek director Dimitris Koutsiabasakos will present the film “The Grocer” (O Manavis, 2012), a documentary feature which has received critical acclaim in several film festivals.
Famous French director Yves Boisset comes in Tirana to rescreen after more than 40 years his famous film “The Assassination” (L’attentat, 1972).
On the 20th anniversary of the Fellini’s death, a month after the premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the last biographic film by Maestro Ettore Scola for the Great Federico Fellini will be screened.
Traditional collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture will bring a unique Sicilian flavor by director Luca Vullo, who will unveil through his film language the most successful international experiences.
Along with the Durres International Film Festival, TIFF is the biggest movie festival in Albania. The first and only international cinema festival of its kind in Albania, TIFF was established in 2003 showcasing movies competing in four categories including feature films, short-films, the Digiart, TV short film competition, and the Albanian short-film competition.
All the daily programs of the TIFF festival combine features and short films of all formats and genres – fiction, documentary, animation and experimental. On its daily agenda, TIFF also dedicates time to classes and seminars with professionals in the motion picture industry geared for Albanian film students and emerging filmmakers.
Two juries composed of leading film writers, directors and critics will evaluate and then select the best features & shorts with awards presented on the closing night. Awards will be handed out for the best TIFF film, best Balkan film, best short film, best animated film and best documentary, best director, best actor and actress.
“Above all, it is the aim of the Tirana International Film Festival to create a meeting point for film artists and cinema enthusiasts from Albania, the Balkans and the entire world to come together and share their common passion and knowledge of the motion picture art form,” organizers say.
