Naum Vehilharxhi honoured with bust in Romania

TIRANA, May 21 – The Romanian city of Braila has honoured Naum Veqilharxhi, one of the founders of the Albanian Renaissance Movement in the 19th century, with a bust placed in the Boulevard “Independenteti”, in one of the main squares of the town.
The bust in Braila, where Vehilharxhi spent most of his adult life since leaving Albania at an early age, was made possible under the auspices of the Edmond Haxhinasto, Albania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The bust’s inauguration ceremony was attended by the Albanian Ambassador to Romania, Sami Shiba, the Chairman of the District Council of Braila, Mr. Gheorghe Bunea Sancu, media representatives, friends of Albania, writers, students and others.

Naum Veqilharxhi (1797-1854) was an Albanian lawyer and scholar. In 1844, he created a unique alphabet for the Albanian language using characters he had created himself. Veqilharxhi is one of most prominent figures of the early Albanian National Awakening.
