Tirana, June 16 – The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Water Resources announced that it is speeding up its investments to improve the quality of seawater in Albanian seashores. The Ministry monitored the quality of seawater last year on Albanian beaches. The monitoring revealed that several Albanian beaches had higher concentrations of bacteria than allowed by safety levels set by the European Union. The most polluted beaches were Durr촩, Vlora, Saranda, Kavaja, and Sh쯧jini. Velipoja, Dh쳭iu, Himara, and Borshi, which are located far away from main towns, were the cleanest beaches in Albania.
The Ministry concluded that the unsatisfactory conditions were due to raw sewage being pumped into the sea. The Ministry of Environment used US $1.7 million to prepare the necessary plans to obtain Euro 24.4 million from the European Union for the improvement of sewage and sewage cleaning stations in major Albanian cities.
The Albanian Ministry of Environment is using Euro 2.7 million to improve waste treatment facilities and build a new cleaning station in the town of Vlora. The Ministry has already used the bulk of the European Union grant to finance the improvement and building of new sewage and cleaning works in Saranda, Pogradeci, Durr촩, Sh쯧jini, and Lezha. Simultaneously, the Ministry is preparing to invest Euro 1.1 million in building a new sewage cleaning station for the town of Shiroka and the adjacent area.
This year, the Ministry of Environment is monitoring the quality of seawater in 69 different beaches to control the effect of its investments and seek other polluted locations.
