TIRANA, June 30 – A new orthography dictionary has been promoted more than 3 decades after the publication of the first dictionary of this kind. The dictionary compiled by linguists Ali Dhrimo and Rami Memushaj contains around 75,000 words and is a reflection of the enrichment that the Albanian language has undergone during the past 20 years.
According to Memushaj, the dictionary reflects changes in phonetics, grammar and orthography during the past four decades. The previous orthography dictionary had been published in 1976, four years after the standard Albanian language was officially adopted.
The modern Albanian literary language, agreed upon at the Orthography Congress of 20 to 25 November 1972, is a combination of the two dialect groups, though based about eighty percent on the southern Tosk dialect. It is now a widely accepted standard both in Albania and elsewhere, though there have been increasing tendencies in recent years to revive literary northern Gheg dialect.
