TIRANA, April 20 – The Albanian government has asked liquid gas operators to build separate filling stations for gas cylinders and be responsible for their quality. The appeal came this week by Energy Minister Damian Gjiknuri in a meeting with gas operators following a government decision last March setting new rules for the trade of gas cylinders whose incidents in the past few years injured dozens of people and even claimed lives.
“The filling of gas cylinders will no longer be allowed in petrol stations. Special stations must be built for their sale and there will be harsh penalties for those who don’t respect trade rules for gas cylinders,” said Gjiknuri.
Last March, a government decision determined new rules increasing safety in the sale and installation of gas cylinders. The decision came after a powerful gas cylinder explosion earlier in February left at least 30 people injured, many of whom seriously, at a village bar near Pogradec in southeastern Albania.
