TIRANA, Aug 11 – The government has come up with an idea for paying back or compensating those politically persecuted under the communist regime.
All of those who have made the application for compensation may change or recompile their request with new documentation. That will probably mean a lot more bureaucratic work for them.
The former politically persecuted have always been used as a target or a tool during the post-communist period.
They have usually affiliated with the governing Democratic Party but only a few of them have really profited from such an action.
There is high tension and a stronger political fight for their cause especially ahead of the elections in the country, very likely because their votes and those of their families are needed. But soon they are forgotten or sidelined.
Then the protests resume but with their strength ebbing each election. Many of the former politically persecuted have passed away and their children and families have likely not the fervent desire to reclaim what the country, the government owes to them. Others are closely politically affiliated and may have profited, sometimes even more than what they deserved.
The others seem to be powerless.
It seems their saga will be soon forgotten with some very much pleased, others somewhat pleased and most of them forgotten.
That’s not what they were promised after the fall of communism in 1990.
New way to pay back the former politically persecuted
