TIRANA, Feb 2 – Interior Minister Bujar Nishani met with prefects of various Albanian areas in order to urge them to proceed faster in the process of equipping Albanian citizens with their new identity cards.
The minister said that the citizens should be equipped with the new IDs and priority should be given to those persons who do not possess a valid passport. They are 730,000 such persons that exist countrywide.
Local authorities will display printed lists of these people which is an important element for the upcoming parliamentary elections planned for June 29.
On Monday, Prime Minister Sali Berisha accompanied by some western diplomats and other senior officials inaugurated production launch of the first new IDs.
Authorities have pledged that all citizens who have completed the necessary application since the projects start date, Jan. 12, will be able to get the new IDs in the next 10 days.
