TIRANA, Jan 26 – One miner was killed and another injured last Sunday after a gallery at a chromium mine collapsed in the northern town of Bulqiza.
Arjan Duva, 38, a father of three children, becomes the 17th miner to die in the last two years in the Bulqiza area where there are some 40 companies operating.
The gallery where the accident took place was used by an unlicensed company, according to the ministry of economy.
Chromium is Albania’s largest mineral resource and is one of the country’s main exports. In 2007, Albania exported more than euro130 million in chromium, nearly one-fifth of the country’s total exports.
But investment in safety continue to remain low in that industry.
