Opera House celebrates 60th birthday with gala night

TIRANA, Dec. 18 – The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet celebrated its 60th anniversary with a gala night bringing back the best pieces that have been staged on the Opera House since its foundation in 1953. The gala night directed by Nikolin Gurakuqi brought on stage areas, duets, choral music, and ballet from the best Albanian and international repertoire. Soloists of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet and special guests performing abroad such as Agim Hushi, Kledi Kadiu performed on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Opera House.
Operas such as The Barber of Seville, Tosca, Il Trovattore and Albanian pieces such as Skanderbeg and Halili and Hajria were staged during the gala night. Ten years after its last stage, the “Halili and Hajria,” the first Albanian ballet staged at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet back in 1963, returned a few days ago to commemorate its 50th anniversary and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Opera House. The ballet, considered one of the most successful Albanian pieces which has also toured around Europe, came under a new choreography by Arian Sukniqi.
The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, which this year marks its 60th anniversary is the largest theatre in Albania and is home to an opera and ballet ensemble. The theatre was founded in 1953 and is a repertory theatre, which also regularly offers premi鳥s of operas by Albanian composers.
This year, it joined world celebrations to mark the 200th birth anniversary of Verdi and Wagner, staging premieres composed by two of the world’s greatest composers.
