TIRANA, Aug. 20 – The main opposition Socialist party blamed the government Monday for the poor management of Albania’s power crisis and also for corruption in its efforts of resolving it.

“Corruption and bad management has entered every Albanian’s home limiting not only electricity and drinking water supplies but also oil, petrol, and the price of daily bread,” said Andis Harasani, a senior leader in the party and also former top manager of the Albanian Electro-Energy Corporation, or KESH.

This summer, Albania is suffering from 6-20 hours of power outages per day.

Post-communist Albania has suffered from poor management of its power corporation which has not collected payments from individual consumers and small businesses.

The power crisis has also been aggravated by a continuous lack of rain.

Albania produces more than 95 percent of its electricity from hydroelectric resources, which have been scarce this year.

Adding to the crisis, no new power sources, or alternate ones, have been built in the last 20 years.

The opposition asked the government to offer assistance to bakeries and to speed the importation of the flour needed for baking bread.
