TIRANA, May 19 – Petro Koci, a lawmaker of the opposition, appealed Monday on Prosecutor General Ina Rama to also ask for lifting the immunity of Prime Minister Sali Berisha accusing him of responsibility in the March 15 Gerdec blasts that killed 26 persons and injured 302 others.
Koci also said that ex-defense minister Fatmir Mediu’s immunity will also be lifted soon.
Rama has already asked for Mediu’s immunity wanting to charge him with abuse of post for that tragedy. Mediu, who resigned two days after the blast only for moral responsibilities, is abroad at the moment but has pledged he will be back soon.
Koci also said that citizens should closely follow the way the investigation is being proceeded so that the real cause of the ballast is found and punished.
Koci said that accidental causes cannot be the cause of the Gerdec blast where a company was disposing ammunition.
“It will be in the dignity of the prosecutor general to have the courage to ask for Berisha’s immunity who bears legal and moral responsibility not only as a premier managing armed forces in peaceful times but also as a citizen due to the involvement in the ammunition traffic issue of his close family persons.” (Tirana Times Staff)
