TIRANA, July 18 – The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Albania, together with other international partners, held an event Wednesday to promote women’s participation and leadership in public affairs.

Female Members of Parliament and other women holding elected positions spoke at the event, together with the Head of the OSCE Presence, Ambassador Pavel Vacek and the Special Adviser to the Council of Europe, Delphine Freymann.

The half-day event also included sessions with current and former Albanian mayors and regional leaders, who discussed needs and shared experiences.

A network created during the event will provide support and strengthen exchanges on community leadership and public service.

Ten of the Albanian Parliament’s 140 members are women. In the 2007 local government elections, only 33 of the 1,073 candidates nominated for mayoral or head of municipality posts were women. Only nine of the 33 were elected.
