TIRANA, April 20 – A concert commemorating the 80th birth anniversary of late Albanian composer Pjeter Gaci was held last weekend in Tirana. The concert at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet brought young and acclaimed opera singers performing areas composed by Gaci and other renowned composers.
The concert followed the “Pjeter Gaci” pan-national competition on instrumentalists and lyrical singers held earlier this month in Shkodra, which this year held its 10th edition.
Pjeter Gaci was born in 1931 in Shkodra, northern Albania. An accomplished composer, violinist, and professor, he completed his studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. He was one of the first to establish the Albanian violin school. The Ballade for Violin and Piano is among his most celebrated works. Originally written with an orchestral accompaniment in 1978, it was later arranged by the composer for violin and piano. The composer utilizes melodies drawn from Northern Albanian folklore.
