TIRANA, March 6 – Senior police officials and civil ones gathered Tuesday to discuss on police work during the local elections of last month. The international election monitoring mission hailed police behavior during the polls. Police chief Bajram Ibraj considered police behavior as ‘legal, professional and depoliticized.’ Ibraj mentioned all the commandments that had come from international and local institutions and the media. Ibraj also mentioned the fact that the country and its citizens did not suffer from any increase of the crime rate during the electoral time period as the result of the good work from police.
Ibraj said that police had followed 2,430 electoral activities with some 10,626 policemen. They were present in 35 incidents. At the same time police cracked down on 34 criminal groups and discovered all the 13 murders committed at the first two months this year. Twenty-three persons were extradited from Greece, Italy, Britain, Germany, U.S., Netherlands, Montenegro, Spain and France. During this time police have blocked some 60 kilograms of heroin, 771 kilograms of marijuana, and 1.2 kilograms of cocaine. Police also arrested 191 wanted suspects.
