TIRANA, Feb. 22 – The political fight between the governing Democratic party and the main opposition Socialist Party finds no rest and no free place. Albanians listen every day of that fight, see it occurred everywhere the two opposing groups meet.
That is the case of the weekly meetings of the parliamentary commissions. That has been highlighted in the last two weeks at the Law Commission, discussing on ways how to ‘deprive’ lawmakers from their parliamentary immunity and also some procedural steps of the sessions.
Both issues have turned into a political issue.
The governing Democrats signed themselves a paper through which they tell the prosecutor’s office they enjoy no immunity of they are wanted to be investigated or accused. They base that move on precedence from the Bundestag, the German parliament. Any lawmaker enjoys the right not to sign it.
But the opposition says that is useless and against the laws in the country. They, on their side, suggest constitutional amendments and also that the law cover not only the lawmakers but also all the judiciary personnel.
No compromise achieved. The opposition commission lawmakers abandoned the meeting and the governing lawmakers passed it at the commission only with their votes. The same is going to happen at the parliamentary session when it will be voted by all governing Democrats and their allies but not the opposition.
On the next issue _ that of the procedural points of the session _ the governing Democrats made the move of the free-hour debate at the end of the session, fearing the opposition MPs exploit that to disrupt the session. They also set some penalties for those lawmakers who stayed more than two minutes at the podium after the Speaker asks them to leave it at the end of their timing.
The opposition lawmakers considered that as an effort to extinguish them at all and oblige them play what the governing colleagues want to.
The political fight is taking new steps and reaching no end.
