‘Port of Durres – 25 years after the 1991 exodus’ photo exhibition opened on March 2 at Nikolet Vasia Gallery in Durres, Albania. Organized by the Durres Port Authority, in cooperation with the Municipality of Durres and the Albanian Telegraphic Agency, the event brought to attention one of the most important episodes in the recent history of Durres and the whole country – the March 1991 exodus to Italy.
“We remember what happened 25 years ago, those sad days this city has passed during its life – the exodus days, when thousands of young people fled to Europe. 25 years have passed but we must not forget those days. The port has been seen as a ray of hope, and from the gates of this port young people have immigrated to Europe,” said mayor of Durres Vangjush Dako at the opening ceremony.
The exhibition will bring for the first time 25 black and white photos by Albanian Telegraphic Agency photographers taken during the months of March and August 1991. Raw footage of Port of Durres in 1991 will also be shown during the exhibition which will be open until March 7, 2016.
