DURRES, July 17 – Summer power outages shut down the radar systems of the border police checking the Adriatic shore for smugglers, local media reported.

A great part of the radars monitoring the shore up to 12 miles out to sea were not functioning and generators were also limited in maintaining the radar due to the high cost of running them. Without radar, police forces resumed patrolling the shores, as in the past, with speedboats, or policemen walking along the shore.

Albanian authorities have imposed a three-year ban on all speedboats along the shore in an effort to give an end to the illegal trafficking of human beings, drugs and arms across the sea.
