Prisoners in protest in Tirana

TIRANA, March 24 – Prisoner in Tirana have begun a hunger strike to protest the quality of their daily meals.

Since last weekend, a group of prisoners have refused to eat the normal food claiming the quality is inferior and it is not safe to eat. They also complained of corruption by the top officials of the prison.

Prisoners also are seeking longer visitation periods to meet with their families.

The protest may have also spread to another prison in Tirana.

The country’s prison department announced they are seeking to negotiate an end to the strike and would take into account the prisoners’ requests.
