TIRANA, Oct. 26 – The government has decided to pull down the Pyramid, a Cultural Center, that once served as the museum for the late communist dictator Enver Hoxha.
In its recent decision the Pyramid is to turn into a parliament.
Only a few years ago, the same government had decided to turn the Pyramid into a big cultural center, or a big Theater hosting many activities.
The Pyramid was built to serve as a museum for Hoxha inaugurated in 1988, after his death.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha promised on Monday to complete the new building by 2012, on the 100th anniversary of the country’s independence.
“There can be no Pyramid in downtown Tirana that makes memories of one of the worst dictatorships in Europe fixed forever in our minds,” Berisha said.
The opposition does not agree and many other personalities in urban architecture complained that destroying that building could not serve the purpose.
The government had first decide to build the new parliament at the same place where its main offices are located now, also used from the former communist regime as its headquarters for the top leaders.
