TIRANA, Dec 1 – Main opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama participated in the two days of Independence and Liberation, Nov 28 and 29 respectively, in the Kosovar capital and the Greek capital.
In Prishtina, he met with the country’s top leaders who had gathered to celebrate the national Independence Day, though Kosova is a separate country with its own days to celebrate.
Thousands of people spontaneously poured onto the streets to celebrate Nov 28, 1912 when Albania declared independence from the then-Ottoman Empire.
A day later Rama went to Athens, Greece to meet there with Albanian immigrants.
Often political parties believe immigrants are an important part of the vote they hope to win over in next year’s general elections.
On Nov 29, Rama returned to Tirana to celebrate the White Night, a day with music, dancing and other celebrations throughout the capital. Many people could also go to the city hall, which he heads, to have their picture taken with him. Rama also traveled to Madrid, Spain to take part in the meeting of the leftist European political parties. Rama met with many political counterparts from European countries.
But Rama had to return to Tirana to take part in a lunch held to honor Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Tuesday.
