SHKODRA, April 22 – Opposition Socialist party leader pledged to voters in northern Albanian city of Shkodra that his party would cancel any idea of building a nuclear reactor in the area like Prime Minister Sali Berisha had been saying recently.
Edi Rama told voters in his electoral trip to the northern city that they should not trust Berisha. He reminded them that he had pledged to voters in southwestern Vlora city there would be no power plant in their area unless they decided to have one in a referendum. But the pledge served only to attract their votes for the 2005 elections, he said.
Common Albanians in northern Shkodra have turned down the idea of having a nuclear reactor in their territory, a “crazy move” as Rama also called it.
Last week there were reports from the media in neighboring Montenegro that Albania and Croatia would likely sign by the end of the month a memorandum of understanding to build a nuclear reactor on Shkodra Lake, something which they said was strongly opposed by Podgorica.
Later Zagreb turned down the idea saying there was no such a plan at all, but only experts from both countries were discussing the idea. There was no reaction from Tirana, likely trying to remain passive during pre-electoral time
