TIRANA, April 29 – The Republican Party appealed Sunday for the convening of an urgent roundtable of the governing coalition to discuss the participation of each ally in the governing cabinet.
The call came after Prime Minister Sali Berisha of the Democratic Party seemed to accept a threat a day earlier from the Christian Democratic parliamentarian, Nikolle Lesi, for more posts in his cabinet.
Arjan Madhi of the Republicans said that a roundtable should again consider the criteria of participation in the cabinet.
The Republicans have their leader, Fatmir Mediu, in the post of the defense minister, while Christian Democrats have their leader, Nard Ndoka, in the post of the health minister. Others maintain lower level posts in the administration.
Both parties are the two main allies of the ruling Democrats.
Madhi said that in case of a change of the vice ministers, the Republicans would require more positions.
The premier was obliged to make a second surprise reshuffling last week after the former foreign minister resigned his post complaining of being ‘tired.’
Lulzim Basha of the transport and telecommunication ministry was then moved to the post of the foreign minister and Sokol Olldashi returned to the cabinet to take Basha’s position.
