TIRANA, Aug. 15 – Bloggers suggest that Albania’s first-place ranking in a World Tourism Organization list is a result of the high percentage of business travelers and returning expatriates.
Albania earns more per tourist than any other country in the world, according to the World Tourism Organization, though the country’s economy and its tourist industry are not fully developed.
While it might be surprising that there are states like Moldova, Lebanon and Belarus that earn more from tourism than resort islands that have duty free systems.
However, it is likely this happens because visitors in the non-resort countries are mainly businessmen and the cost for trips there are higher.
Experts note, one may then question the true definition of “tourism.” Are Albanian emigrants who return to the country to visit their families considered tourists? Albania has no exact statistics for the number of tourists and their income.
