TIRANA, June 4 – The Roman thermal baths in the city of Durres have reopened to the public after more than two decades which saw them brutally buried in the basement of a new apartment block built in the early 2000s.
Culture Minister Mirela Kumbaro described the ancient thermal baths which date back to the 1st century A.D as one of the landmark sites in Durres which will be included in the local tourist itinerary.
The Roman thermal baths were discovered in 1962 and consist of a heating system and a 7 x 5 m long pool.
Meanwhile, the archeological park of Orikum in the southern city of Vlora has also reopened to the public after being cleared of vegetation, and provided with tourist signs also available in English.
The ancient city of Orikum is rather unusual amongst Albanian national parks as it lies within the confines of the naval base at Pasha Liman, south of Vlora. The city is set in a fine location on a small hill overlooking the bay of Vlora to the north and a sheltered lagoon to the south.
