TIRANA, Dec. 7 – Romanian Defense Minster Teodor Melescanu visited Albania last week, pledging his country’s full support to Tirana’s efforts to join NATO next year.
NATO will hold a summit in Bucharest in April, 2008 when Albania hopes to be invited to join the alliance as a full member.
Melescanu met with top Albanian officials, saying his country was in favor of Albania’s membership into the bloc and hailed the government reforms and other steps toward that goal. Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that his government, and all Albanian institutions, would do their utmost to fulfill the standards and necessary criteria to deserve the NATO invitation.
