Starting with its premiere on Feb. 29, the “Bitter Love” tragedy directed by Italy’s Carlo Bruni will be staged at the National Theatre in Tirana every weekend until May 22
TIRANA, April 26 – The famous Romeo and Juliet love story and tragedy is coming to the Albanian public in a rather different version written and directed by Italy’s Carlo Bruni who was inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy under the same title. The tragedy named “Bitter Love” will have its premiere on Friday, April 29, at the National Theatre in Tirana as an Albanian-Italian cooperation bringing together a mixed cast of young and veteran actors.
“The stage of this piece changes and abandons the original, attempting to respect intimate values, fruits of a generous and tough tree, and simply tells what we are, showing Love in a fight which yet often remains Bitter,” says the Italian director as quoted in a statement by the Italian Institute of Culture in Tirana.
Carlo Bruni has selected two newly graduates to perform the lead roles of Romeo and Juliet in the National Theatre in Tirana. Andi Begolli and Erjeta Curfaj will be performing along with big names such as Yllka Mujo and Monika Lubonja.
“I believe that it is difficult for everybody to exactly say when and how the story of Romeo and Juliet came to their memory; in a certain moment it becomes part of us as if it had read us much earlier before we read it,” says Bruni, adding that the romance was selected as a bridge where people can meet.
Starting with its premiere on Feb. 29, the “Bitter Love” will be staged at the National Theatre in Tirana every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 19.00 until May 22. Next June the tragic romance is also expected to be staged in the Italian language.
The internationally renowned love story and tragedy was also premiered in its original version by the private Metropol Theatre in Tirana earlier this year.
At the National Theatre, it comes after the successful stage of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible as the first premiere opening the new season. Some 21 established and young actors were selected to perform in the drama directed by Spiro Duni with Timo Flloko and Eva Alikaj starring.
