TIRANA, Sept. 11 – Saimir Pirgu, Albania’s internationally renowned tenor, returns to London’s Royal Opera House with the lead role of Duke of Mantua in Verdi’s Rigoletto. Pirgu will perform at the Royal Opera on Sept. 12, 15, 20, 23, 27, 30 and October 6 in one of Verdi’s most famous operas in three acts.
Giuseppe Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto, based on Victor Hugo’s play Le Roi s’amuse, was his ‘best opera’. Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect.
