Asymmetric d괩r represents the artist’s continued ambition to lay bare the realities of psychological and political exploitations that are rife throughout contemporary society
TIRANA, Dec. 18 – New York-based, Kosovo contemporary artist Sislej Xhafa has opened his first exhibition in London at the Blain|Southern gallery where he is being featured with his Asymmetric D괩r show.
Bringing together painting, sculpture and installation, Xhafa explores the effects of contemporary consumerism, examining the social, economic and political imbalances inherent in all capitalist societies. “Using an ironic and subversive black humour that is intrinsic to his practice, the artist works to expose the limitations of material possessions, highlighting the futility of commercial desire when considered within a broader context of metaphysical and existential questions,” the gallery said on its website.
Xhafa once described how ‘reality is stronger than art. As an artist I do not want to reflect a reality, but I do want to question it.’ Asymmetric d괩r represents the artist’s continued ambition to lay bare the realities of psychological and political exploitations that are rife throughout contemporary society.
Born in Peja, Kosova in 1970, artist Sislej Xhafa is based in New York. He is known for his artistic investigation into the social, economical and political realities associated with the various complexities of modern society. Xhafa has over the years highlighted his artistic work on economic and social themes, political realities, as they interact with the protean variety of modern society.
His investigations, for example, into phenomena of tourism or forced illegality use a minimal language and they are at the same time ironic and subversive, practicing indifferently a wide range of media, from sculpture to drawing, from performance to photography.
His exhibition at the Blain|Southern gallery will remain open from December 13 to January 25, 2014.
