TIRANA, September 22 – The National Theatre will open its new season with Sophocles’ Electra, one of the most successful performances of this year. The tragedy will be staged for three consecutive evenings from September 24 to 26 at 19.00.
Translated into Albanian by Laert Vasili and directed by the renowned Andonis Filipi, the ancient Greek tragedy will bring together some of the best Albanian actors such as Luiza Xhuvani, Roza Anagnosti, Bujar Asqeriu etc. The tragedy was also successfully staged last year at the National Theatre.
Set in the city of Argos a few years after the Trojan War, the tragedy is based on the character of Electra, and the vengeance that she and her brother Orestes take on their mother Clytemnestra and step father Aegisthus for the murder of their father, Agamemnon.
Electra also represented Albanian National Theatre in this year’s 11 edition of the international Butrint theatre festival. Last July, the National Theatre closed its 10-month season with the stage of seven premieres, among which four international and regional co-productions, registering a record number of premieres during the past 20 years.
The National Theatre, which also celebrated its 65th anniversary of foundation this year, was decorated with the highest “Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu” order and had seven of its artists honoured.
