Last week the book, “Medieval miniature and painting in Albania (VI-XIV Centuries)” was promoted at the Academy of Sciences in Tirana, the work of the distinguished scholar and theologian Theofan Popa. This is Popa’s second volume, following the publication of one of the most unique Balkan works, “Church inscriptions in Albania”, publication of the year 1998.”Unfortunately Popa did not leave worthy heirs behind, someone who had his knowledge of the rare languages he mastered,” said the Director of the General Archives Directory Nevila Nika. The volume, “Medieval miniature and painting in Albania (VI-XIV Centuries)”, is a collection of inscriptions of the churches all over Albania.
Apart from research value, these inscriptions could also serve as a guide for future searches to find objects which are outside of the borders of Albania. The Monograph of Popa is composed of two parts: the first includes the miniatures and codices of the Middle Ages, and the second, religious buildings and caves of the Medieval period. “This publication is a valuable contribution both in the documentary and scientific aspects. It is an unknown page in the history of the Albanians and fulfills something that is lacking. The value of the monograph is two fold, while the scientific analysis is profound and rich in many aspects,” declared researcher Luan Maltezi on this occasion.
