TIRANA, May 3 – Time of the Comet, a movie directed by Albania’s Fatmir Toci represented Albania in the 15 edition of the Rochester International Film Festival held from April 30 to May 6 in the United States.
Set shortly before WWI and based on a novel of renowned writer Ismail Kadare, the movie brings elements of romance, tragedy and comedy all at once.
Events are set in 1914, when Albania was just liberated from the Ottoman Empire. A German, Prince Wied, is installed as the King of Albania. He receives a letter from Muslim fanatics insisting that he should undergo circumcision as required by their religion but refuses. Shestan, a Muslim, and his four friends set off to fight for their country equipped with an old Turkish map of the Balkans that is thoroughly out of date. Instead of the enemy, Shestan meets and falls in love with Agnes, a Catholic who had been sent to a convent against her wishes. Shestan and his friends keep looking for war in all the wrong places.
