TIRANA, June 9 – The majority Democrats asked the prosecutors’ office to launch a penal indictment against an opposition lawmaker who had allegedly threatened the life of a governing MP on the floor of the parliament.
The Democrats’ parliamentary group sent the accusation to the prosecutor’s office asking that an investigation be started against Socialist lawmaker Tom Doshi who had threatened their MP Gent Strazimiri last month during a parliamentary session.
The same day, Taulant Balla of the Socialists also sent an indictment against Democrats’ leader and Prime Minister Sali Berisha based on the same charges in an act committed in 2008.
So it seems that the Albanian political parties are trying to raise the credence of the judiciary, which has always been considered the Achilles’ heel in the country’s integration efforts.
That is really good, if the indictments were launched for that cause. But one may say that is not the real one. That is just another political step they are taking at this moment of their political conflict, crisis, or deadlock, whatever name they want to give.
True that first the prosecutors have to consider whether such accusation bear ground to launch an investigation and if that would be positive, then their Prosecutor general would ask parliament to lift the immunity of the defendants.
That could be easily reached for the opposition lawmaker as the governing party already has enough votes to pass that and also oppose the request from the opposition lawmaker against their leader.
But that would just add another brick in the heavy political wall which is falling on the country’s fragile shoulders.
And nothing would be achieved.
