TIRANA, Feb, 6 – This time it is the Tirana city hall that is suing the construction police and not letting it build a fountain at the Zogu i Zi cross-section. The city hall complains that the fountain at the cross section is illegal and it is not known where the funding for that is coming from. The two police forces almost confronted physically Monday and other police forces had to intervene to stop a physical quarrel.
Central government authorities demolished in July last year a half-built road project in downtown Tirana that had led to a bitter dispute between Tirana’s Socialist-run city hall of Mayor Edi Rama and the country’s governing coalition, led by Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s Democratic Party. State Construction Police demolished the US$2 million intersection known as Zogu i Zi after the government decided that project should not be continued because of safety concerns, insufficient documentation and corruption among Tirana officials. The project was started in 2005 by the previous Socialist government and was due for inauguration in March 2006.
