TIRANA, July 14 – TransMedia has launched the Glide OS World Development Programme (GWDP) to bring Glide’s low cost mobile computing solutions to the developing world.
Donald Leka, TransMedia chairman and CEO, said, “The programme will begin with the world’s youngest nation, Kosovo, currently with an unemployment rate of over 60 per cent and a recent history of ethnic strife. Glide Kosovo will be available in both the Albanian and Serbian languages and will provide powerful mobile productivity and collaboration applications to promote entrepreneurship, economic opportunity and greater cooperation in Kosovo among ethnic groups.” The GWDP also announced the launch of Glide Albania. Having already outpaced Apple, Google, and Microsoft by delivering a complete socially-oriented cloud computing service that works with Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and assorted mobile phones, New York-based TransMedia is trying to bring an element of social responsibility to computer-driven interaction.
To help promote social interaction in a part of the world where ethnic conflicts have been common, Leka said that TransMedia would be absorbing e-commmerce transaction fees incurred through the use of the Glide platform’s personal online store service. The idea is to encourage commerce across ethnic and cultural lines. Thus, if an Albanian buys something from a Serbian through Glide, he or she would be eligible for a discount. Leka said the discount will also be available for those claiming financial need, which he said will probably be many subscribers in Kosovo and Albania.
Leka said he expects to have Glide OS available in 20 countries by the end of the year. At present, Glide OS has some 565,000 users.
