TIRANA, July 3 – Two recent Albanian movie and documentary film productions will screen in Denmark’s Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde in late July 2014.
Amnesty, a movie directed by Albania’s Bujar Alimani which made its premiere at the 2011 Berlinale film festival, is scheduled to screen on July 25. The museum describes the movie as a subtle exploration of the Albanian society.
“A new national law allowing conjugal visits for inmates brings together a man and woman visiting the same prison to meet their incarcerated spouses. A prisoner amnesty, however, soon threatens their fragile bond in this closely observed, sensual and contemplative drama highlighting a period of subtle but profound social transformation.”
La nave dolce (The human cargo), a 2012 documentary film by Daniele Vicari, will be the second screening on Albania on July 26, featuring the country’s incredible journey to freedom in the early 1990s just as the country’s 45-year communist regime was collapsing.
“More than twenty years ago, the cargo ship Vlora disgorged roughly 20,000 Albanian refugees into the Italian port of Bari. Images showing the astounding mass of people and their subsequent mistreatment by overwhelmed authorities have been largely forgotten now that clandestine crossings are common and met with apathy, but Daniele Vicari’s timely documentary film, composed of frank interviews and a wealth of disturbing news footage from the time, captures movingly and efficiently this historical event, allowing informed audiences to draw their own parallels between past and present.”
